The Band Toto Asia
Toto expanded its production facilities abroad, and doing business in France and Germany, Indonesia, Korea and Taiwan, Thailand and the People's Republic of China. Toto considered North America as a growth market for Washlet bidets and toilets, as opposed to its "base" markets of Japan and China.

Origins

Discography
It is common for a group with a name such as Asia to be a prog rock band, but it is actually a fairly straight forward rock outfit. The band began as four-piece, and released two albums: 1979's self-titled debut and 1980's Armed to the Teeth. However, even though the group have a wide range of musical backgrounds, their biggest success was achieved in 1982 with Toto IV.
The album was a huge blockbuster but not without its difficulties. The record companies placed the band under pressure to release a hit single or else they would pull the album. Luckily for Toto they delivered with the aid of the smash single "Africa."
Toto's musical mastery is the result of their previous experience. Before forming the group, members worked as session musicians for artists such as Boz Scaggs. Steely Dan and Seals and Crofts. Their distinctive sound has become the norm for '80s pop, and has influenced many contemporary artists.

After Toto IV, the band's fortunes turned for the worse. David Hungate left the band to focus on his solo career, and the band was dominated by drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball left the band after drug charges. The band continued to play with Michael Porcaro, Steve Lukather and Michael Porcaro.
Despite the chaos, Toto forged ahead and released Isolation however, which was not as successful as IV. However, the band managed to release another chart-topping album in 1992 with Kingdom of Desire. The album was the last of Toto's lineup and the debut of Simon Phillips, a new singer.

Line-up
Turn Back, the band's third studio album it was a return to a traditional sextet style and it was a more consistent, more powerful album with a sharper edge. The edgier sound of Turn Back was a reflection of the maturation in the group. Drummer Bobby Kimball's increased ability to play was evident in the vocals of Joseph Williams, who had become more confident and mature. David Paich's keyboard playing was also more sophisticated, sharper, and less derivative on previous efforts.
After touring to promote their album, the band recorded their Amsterdam live concert which was released on Eagle Records as a 2-CD set entitled Falling In Between. The group released a brand new studio album a few months later, and went on a world tour to support it. During this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.
In 1998, Paich and Lukather started searching through old demo tapes and tapes to make an album that would feature songs that were never recorded before. It was released in the form of a double-album called Then and Now in 2001. It was the first album by the band without a single song titled "A". The album also included a previously unreleased track called "Kari-Anne".
By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial flop and the vocalist Williams was suffering from a severe case of laryngitis which limited his singing capabilities. Hungate also returned to Nashville and Leland Sklar's drumming was replaced by Shem Von Schroeck.
Downes, Wetton Palmer and Howe, the original members of Asia The original Asia members met in England early in 2006 to discuss the possibility that the group could be reformed. The group, which was missing Howe who was occupied with Yes during that period, was later renamed Toto XIV. They toured extensively.
In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The band featured a special appearance by singer Michael McDonald and a backing vocalist named Mabvuto Carver.
